2019 Michelin Predictions
The Bay Area is well known as a hub for fine dining opportunities, several of which are adorned with multiple Michelin Stars. From the San Francisco apartments for rent, you can walk or take an Uber to top locations like Manresa and Saison.
If you’re making a list of must-try restaurants for 2019, then you might want to consider these spectacular locations well on their way to earning another Michelin Star. Without an official announcement, there’s still a lot of speculation on who will earn this coveted achievement. However, here are the top predictions.
Dominique Crenn’s flagship, Atelier Crenn, currently holds two Michelin Stars under its belt. The restaurant and team underwent numerous changes in 2018 in an effort to push for a third. Crenn is already known as inspirational and unique chef, but she’s added pastry chef Juan Contreras and culinary director Jonny Black into the mix.
With a star lineup, the restaurant also underwent a major renovation in their dining room. These changes are coupled by another year of stellar performance. Together, this combination might be exactly what the flagship needs to earn that third star.
This restaurant debuted with two stars off the bat. That’s an incredible accomplishment, and a testament to chef Kyle Connaughton’s culinary vision. Single thread has received numerous accolades throughout 2018, making it another strong candidate for three-star Michelin territory.
Under the leadership of chef Matthew Kirkley, COI received its third star shortly before the chef left to take on a new role as head of the USA’s Bocuse d’Or team. Many restaurants tend to lose a star whenever management changes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that COI will succumb to the same fate.
Chef Erik Anderson has taken over and revamped the menu entirely. Delicate seafood dishes are now replaced by classic French cuisine with a focus on game birds. That’s a major change, and one that may or may not work in the restaurant’s favor.
It’s impossible to talk about high-end restaurants in the Bay Area without mentioning Saison. Recently changing hands to chef Laurent Gras, who has earned three separate locations a three-star Michelin rating in the past, Saison will face the same test as COI this year. It’s unclear what changes will take place under Gras’ leadership, leaving the restaurants current ranking in question.
Elegant style and Moroccan cuisine combine are Mourad Lahlou’s flagship, and it’s one star standing is well earned. Now with Louis Maldonado pioneering a second restaurant for Lahlou while taking on the role of CDC, Mourad’s one star is set to become two. It all comes down to how well this due works together, but the outlook is incredibly positive.
Aina proudly serves a modern take on classic Hawaiian fare, but you might have noticed that its name disappeared from the Bib Gourmand list this year. With no decline in quality and continued standard of excellence, that might mean Aina has finally earned its first Michelin Star. To judge for yourself, stop in an enjoy the chef’s counter tasting menu.
Angler focuses on a luxurious a la carte “sea-life” menu, one that is inspired by Joshua Skenes. It’s a strong contender amongst restaurants seeking their first Michelin Star, but it may have opened a little to late to earn that star in 2019. It wouldn’t be the first time Michelin inspectors brought a new, up-and-coming restaurant into the fold, but Angler may be a more central focus in 2020.
Another high-end location from Dominique Crenn, this wine bar is glowing with ritzy style. From the atmosphere to the wine list, everything is top-tier and Michelin worthy. This is an excellent contender amongst those seeking their first star, and it might just make Crenn a four-star Michelin chef.
With an incredible year complete with local and national accolades, Che Fico’s rustic Italian vision has certainly paid off. Handmade pastas and pizzas, as well as a newly debuted charcuterie tasting, all make this location a high-end destination. Is it enough to earn them a Michelin Star rating, though? Only time will tell, but Che Fico remains a must-try restaurant in the Bay Area either way.
High atop China Live sits Eight Tables, a tasting-menu-only inspired restaurant by George Chen. You’ll need to pay over $200 to get into the dining room of this unique experience, one that encompasses you into the Private chateau style of the Chinese elite.
With rich taste and fine wines, not to mention the classy atmosphere, it’s a strong possibility that Eight Tables will earn its first Michelin Star. In fact, many speculate that it might jump straight to two-star status, which is an incredible accomplishment having only opened in the fall of 2018.
